An Evening With The Phantom Royal Charity Gala Was A Success!

On Wednesday, 18th April, An Evening With The Phantom – Songs From The Musicals made it’s debut in Kuala Lumpur’s Manhattan Ballroom, Berjaya Times Square. It was not just a musical for musical fans (and I know there are many of you out there), but it was also a Royal Charity Gala in aid of Tuanku Ja’afar Educational Trust (TJET).

An Evening With The Phantom Royal Charity Gala

An Evening With The Phantom was held in conjunction with The Phantom Of The Opera’s 30th anniversary on Broadway. The Royal Charity Gala Premiere was graced by both YMM Tunku Ampuan Tuanku Najihah Binti Tunku Besar Burhanuddin and YAM Tunku Naquiyuddin ibni Tuanku Ja’afar.

Before the show commences, YAM Tunku Naquiyuddin ibni Tuanku Ja’afar welcomed the guests and show-goers, thanking everyone involved, as well as contributors to The Royal Charity Gala for the Tuanku Ja’afar Educational Trust (TJET).

YAM Tunku Naquiyuddin stated that since TJET’s inception 25 years ago, it has collected more than RM3 million and on that night itself, they have managed to collect about RM320,000 – almost 10% of the total collection.

This fund was channeled from a portion of proceeds from the ticket sales and will be used to provide proper educational opportunities and necessary financial support to the beneficiaries.

An Evening With The Phantom – Songs From The Musicals

An Evening With The Phantom opened with Phantom Of The Opera – one of the most iconic songs from the musical, and from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s composition.

Claire Lyon, who played Christine in The Phantom Of The Opera Musical was in a very beautiful emerald dress opened the show with her amazing lilting voice. Michael Cormick, who has been in the industry for more than 30 years and played Raoul many times before, accompanied Claire with his rich voice and in his sharp suit.

An Evening With The Phantom wasn’t only playing songs from Phantom Of The Opera but also songs from other musicals including Aladdin, Cats, Chicago, Sound Of Music, Jersey Boys, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, Les Misérables, and Beauty and The Beast.

Guests were fully entertained and sang along to many of the familiar songs sung by both Claire and Michael.

However, the height of the evening would probably be the last few songs before ending the night, which was a medley of Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, Angel Of Music, Think Of Me and Music Of The Night.

Everyone thought the song All I Ask Of You was the last song of the night but the talented pair added one last song – which was the opening number – Phantom Of The Opera, to end An Evening With The Phantom before bidding us all safe journey home.

I couldn’t begin to express the talents of both Claire Lyon and Michael Cormick. However, the 75-minutes musical celebration would be incomplete without the genius musical director, Bernard Walz and Malaysia’s own music talents.
