Backstreet Boys. That pop band which consists of 5 boys (or men now) was quite an integral part of my tween life. I was in love with a blond, blue-eyed “Nick Carter” for many years that I even used his surname as my pen name in my school’s English magazine. I knew every single song by the Backstreet Boys. I was even sent to many detention classes because of them – for smuggling posters, magazines and many other of their memorabilia to school. Well, I was in a Convent school, we’ve got strict rules on stuffs like that.
Anyway, I’ve been to some of their more recent shows, like the performance they had in KLCC a couple years ago but I always wished they would come back with a back-to-the-past concert. The kinda concert that makes you reminisce the old days and jolts you back to the good times. I waited and waited, especially for Kevin Richardson’s comeback because a 4-man band is just not going to have the same impact as the original 5-man band.
Then one day, an official news came out that Backstreet Boys will be touring again and this time, Kevin Richardson is back for good, and boy oh boy was I excited. News and schedule of their tour was released months before the scheduled Backstreet Boys Live In Malaysia concert in May. Which means, ample time to collect money for the tickets!
Backstreet Boys Live In Malaysia 2015
When May was just around the corner, I was looking for last minute alternatives, either winning tickets for the concert or buying a cheap ticket online. I managed to find a seller who was selling the RM429 tickets at RM300 per ticket – the only catch, I have to purchase a pair. I asked around and managed to persuade a handsome bugger to buy the other ticket too. Yes! #fistpump
On the day of the concert on 3rd May 2015, after parking slightly away from Stadium Negara and walked for less than 10 minutes to the stadium, we entered the venue for the concert, but not before performing our prayers first. Now, this is the downside of Stadium Negara because the prayer room is small. Like, it’s super teeny weeny that the room can only fit about 25 people at one time. So imagine on an event day, with hundreds of people at the stadium, trying to catch up for the short prayer window (it was Maghrib prayers anyway), we would appreciate a bigger prayer’s room with working air-condition, at least! Something needs to be done on this issue, please.
The opening act was kinda cool but still, nothing beats the excitement of wanting to see Backstreet Boys in action again and after almost 2 hours of sitting, the lights were dimmed, the stage lit up, and five boys (yes, I know, they’re men now) appeared on stage in blue suits singing a song from their Black & Blue album, “The Call”.
I’m sorry dear handsome bugger next to me but I just can’t stop screaming and jumping and singing and repeating the whole thing. I wasn’t the only one but was joined by other 5,999 fans in the concert venue, including the handsome bugger – which surprised me. LOL!
Awh yeah, Backstreet Boys did not disappoint. Although Brian’s voice is not as good as it used to be – him having undergone throat surgery and all – but their banters with each other are just like how they used to be many years ago. The friendship between these guys are amazing, and why not, since they’ve been together for 22 years! Wow!
They entertained us for 90-minutes by bringing us back to the 90’s, they joke and interacted with the fans, they pimped some lyrics to fit the crowd and they danced with so much energy, you’d never believe that the oldest in the group; Kevin Richardson, is 44 years old already. They sang many songs, from the first album until the current one like, “Incomplete”, “All I Have To Give”, “Show Me The Meaning (Of Being Lonely)”, “I’ll Never Break Your Heart”, “Quit Playing Games With My Heart”, “The One”, “Love Somebody”, “Shape Of My Heart”, “In A World Like This”, “As Long As You Love Me”, “Breathe”, “Madeline”, “Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of” and many many more.
The highlight of the show is probably when AJ asked the fans to turn on the lights on their phones and joked, “If you’re still using Blackberry, we need to have a heart-to-heart talk.” We waved our phones in the air to the song “Drowning”.
After many minutes singing and dancing with some video clips as intervals, the boys said their thanks and waved to the crowd. But everybody knows a concert never ends before the encore. And how can the song “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” ever be wrong as an encore? That dance moves that my friends and I used to memorize back in our school days. That video clip of Nick all wrapped up like a mummy will always be seared in my mind. “Am I sexual?” Awhh yeah!
Before leaving, they informed that they would be back in the studio for a new album and will be touring again to meet more fans soon. Yay! I may not be as crazy for them as I was back in my tweens (more important things to think of nowadays) but seeing them in concert again and be entertained like this again sooner than later, is definitely something I wouldn’t mind signing up for!
P/S : Thank you handsome bugger for the photos and videos.
